FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Bakers’ ‘bread’ supports Hartlepool lifeboat20th January 2007 Bakers’ ‘bread’ supports Hartlepool lifeboat
Family bakers Warburtons have come to the ‘rescue’ of Hartlepool Lifeboat with a ‘doughnation’ that will help improve the training of crew members. There has been a lifeboat at Hartlepool for over 200 years and the search and rescue service it offers today is second to none. The station house on Ferry Road, near Hartlepool Marina, is home to the ‘Betty Huntbatch’, one of the most modern all weather Trent-class lifeboats in the RNLI service and the ‘BBC Radio Cleveland’, an Atlantic 75 fast response inshore boat. To ensure the highest levels of seamanship, training is a regular and vital need at Hartlepool – which is where the bakers have helped out with a £400 cheque for a new computer from the company’s community fund. Lifeboat Operations manager Mike Craddy explained: “Paper-based manuals are a thing of the past, today they have been replaced by CDs so a computer is essential. “We have a dedicated training room where crew members can concentrate and use the computer in small groups or on a one-to-one basis. It is vital that we all keep up to date with modern methods of seamanship but also learn the basic skills of navigation and even how to tie the right knots. “The donation by Warburtons will ensure we can access the latest audio visual training aids.” Hartlepool lifeboat covers are area of coast 100 miles out to sea from Sunderland to Redcar and is often asked by the RNLI in Humberside to help out. 2006 was its busiest year ever with over 60 call outs, mainly to leisure craft, surfers, wind surfers, kite surfers and people caught out by the tides. Presenting the cheque, Warburtons’ Jackie Warren said: “Many employees in our bakeries at Stockton and Newcastle live quite close to the sea and we know how dangerous it can be. “The North East lifeboat crews do a wonderful job saving hundreds of lives very year and we are delighted to be able to help out the Hartlepool crew in this way.” Warburtons has 13 bakeries and 10 depots in the UK and produces enough white loaves each year to build the length of Hadrian’s Wall 52 metres high – that’s 174 feet or 29 six foot men stood on each others shoulders!
