All Weather Arun Class Lifeboat

52-46 RNLB Duke of Atholl

As its name suggests the All-Weather Arun Class Lifeboat is designed to be operated in all weather conditions.  The Arun class lifeboat was first introduced in 1971, has a top speed of 18 knots and carries a crew of 6/7.  The Arun was the RNLI's first UK Designed 'fast' lifeboat.  The Arun has a prominent wheelhouse and upper steering position and carries a Y boat on top of the wheelhouse.  The Arun class lifeboat 52-46 "Duke of Atholl" was withdrawn from station at the end of September 2004.  It was replaced with the newer design and faster Trent class lifeboat 14-37 "Betty Huntbatch" which has a top speed of 25 knots.
